Soccer Across America: Sept. 10

Editor’s note: Starting this week, we’ll have a roundup of American soccer from occasional Only Love Soccer contributor Dan Hagan. Dan will delve into the game in all the nooks and crannies of North America that have been neglected in the past. Let us know what you think!

USL News
The Charleston Battery defeated Willmington Hammerheads to become the USL  2012 Champions in a 1-0 win Saturday night. This is their fourth title in 20 years and seconnd in the last three.

Phoenix FC have a new name and logo.

USL’s MVP, rookie, coach, defender and goalie of the year announced. The Rookie of the Year was also the MVP of the Championship game.

Even though they are done for the season, the LA Blues hosted a friendly against Pachuca (en español).

NASL News
NASL moves to a split season similar to Mexico and a number of South American Leagues. 2013 will see a season starting in March/February ending June with that champion playing the winner of the fall season, which goes from July/August to November.

The swagger of the Cosmos hasn’t been enough to make it to MLS yet, so they will lead the NASL instead?

Five teams have clinched playoff spots. Although the San Antonio Scorpions are only 6 points ahead of second place Tampa Bay, their goal differential is +22 to the Rowdies’ +4. They seem to be on their way to the title. The Carolina RailHawks on Saturday night clinched, even though they lost 1-0. Huh? The Ft. Lauderdale Strikers clinched a spot with a draw against Puerto Rico Islanders on Saturday night. Who’s fighting for the last spot?

PDL/College News

Fox Soccer will make their first attempt to broadcast college games this season. Will your team play in the national spotlight this year?

See who the 10 PDL standouts are that you should be watching in the NCAA.

North Carolina still holds its No. 1 spot, again, but who stayed in and who is out of the top 25?

National Team News
The WNT U-20′s won the World Cup Sunday in Tokyo. They defeated Germany 1-0.

Oh yeah, that other NT lost to Jamaica.

Loan & Trial News
Forward for USL Orlando City, Jamie Watson, has been loaned to NASL Minnesota Stars to finish their season, and fellow Lion, Dennis Chin is training with the Chicago Fire.

Seattle Sounders have loaned out Michael Tettah to Ft. Lauderdale Strikers, who just clinched a playoff spot.
